Kalapana Area
The Kalani Retreat is located in Kalapana, south east of the Big Island in the district of Puna, bordering the tropical jungles and the Pacific ocean.
The retreat is relatively isolated from any commercial establishment and therefore serves as a perfect haven, away from mundane distractions.
Those who do not have rooms in Kalani, please keep in mind that grocery stores and restaurants can only be found in the nearest city of Pahoa, which is about a 25 minute drive—the best option would be to purchase meals separately at Kalani during the conference time (3 meal value is $47, or $42 for local residents). If you have a room in Kalani, your meals are paid for!
Walk along the magnificent red road coastal road and breathe the fresh ocean air. The striking black sand beach is approximately a 15 minute walk. It is engulfed in the coast like a womb and is often visited by colonies of dolphins. Shuttle rides to the beach can be organized from Kalani if one wishes to save some time.
Kalapana is where Pele the Goddess of the Kilauea active volcano resides. The volcano has been active since 1983, streaming a constant flow of lava into the ocean! This powerful and mezmerizing spot is where all 4 life elements Water, Earth, Fire, and Air converge! As a result of the steady stream of lava flow, this island of Hawaii (Big Island) continues to grow, gaining ground over the ocean.Keep in mind that since this is a tropical climate, rain is to be expected. These are usually short and strong downpours, essential to keep the lushness of the jungle. Temperatures commonly vary from 65 to 85 F (18 to 30 C).
Bring your laptop and enjoy wifi connection. Cell phone reception is very poor, so land lines are used for telephone communication.
